This paper reviews the current state of marine electric propulsion systems and explains why these developments are economically and operationally desirable. The paper reviews the current fashion for multi phase designs for the propulsion motors and specifically considers the benefits to be achieved by using a high phase number to excite a propulsion induction motor.
