In this work was studied the possibility of producing ceramic coatings on steels by use of three different techniques, as follow: a. CO_2 laser melt-particle injection, b. Atmospheric plasma-spraying, and c. Concentrated solar energy. Optimization of the conditions of the above mentioned techniques, in order to create a ceramic coating or a surface alloy of satisfactory depth, microstructural homogeneity and pores or cracks free, was realized. The ceramic powder used was CERMET (WC + 17% wt. Co). Wear tests were carried out under the following conditions: Normal load : 10 N, Rotation speed: 200 rpm, Number of revolutions: 60.000 without lubricant. The friction coefficient was decrease from 0.7 of the base metal to 0.5 of the treated surfaces. As for the weight loss of the untreated surface, that was two and four times higher than the mass loss of the plasma-sprayed and laser treated surfaces, respectively, whereas in the case of the solar energy treatment the weight loss of the untreated surface was five times higher than the treated.
