TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE (TPM): A POWERFUL TOOL FOR THE U.S. NAVY

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a maintenance methodology that is gaining acceptance worldwide in the manufacturing industry as a means of increasing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). By increasing OEE, world-class organizations hope to become even more competitive by making more product for less. TPM's five basic tenets are: (1) Eliminate waste, in all forms, from the maintenance function (2) Establish Autonomous Maintenance (total involvement by everyone - including operators - in the maintenance function) (3) Improve Preventive Maintenance (PM is your first line of defense) (4) Increase skills through training (5) Measure effectiveness ("You can't improve what you can't measure") TPM concepts and activities can help Navy Type Commanders achieve their goal of providing adequate levels of material readiness with much fewer resources. An approach to putting the power of TPM to work within Navy maintenance is offered together with specific recommendations and examples.
