HIGH RESOLUTION SATELLITE DATA NEEDS IN FINNISH COASTAL WATERS AND LAKES

Finland has over 56 000 lakes (size > 1 ha) many ofrnwhich are small and have an irregular shape. ThernFinnish coast line is scattered and contains many baysrnand peninsulas. The coastal waters are characterized byrnthousands of small islands. Thus, the water quality ofrnFinnish lakes and coastal waters with moderaternresolution satellite sensors such as MERIS, MODISrnand the forthcoming OLCI are often delimited to openrnlake and outer parts of the coastal waters, and in manyrncases cannot help in fulfilling the requirements of e.g.rnthe Water Framework Directive (WFD). Werndemonstrate the benefits gained by a Sentinel-2 typerninstrument in the dense archipelago region and onrnsmall lake study sites by showing examples withrncurrent instruments and analyzing the suitability ofrnSentinel 2 for monitoring Finnish waters.
