The Transportation System for the New Hong Kong International Airport

The decision by the Hong Kong Government in 1989 to relocate the city airport at Kai Tak had resulted in the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Hong Kong in recent times. The Airport Core Programme consisted of the construction of a new replacement airport and the associated road and rail link, reclamation and a new town, an investment totaling to some US$ 20 billion. The programme was completed in eight years and the new airport opened on July 1998 as scheduled. With the tight time frame, the size and complexity of the project, the ACP was one of the most challenging engineering projects in the world.
