Responsible water quality management employs dredging to improve both the quality of the water as well as the water basin floor. Dredging is used to maintain the accessibility of the waterways and harbours, primarily for depth control and to enhance the influent water flow. Each year enormous quantities of sediment thereby become available. It is, of course, desirable to resourcefully reuse as much of the sediment as possible. Processes and techniques which alter the properties of contaminated dredged material are desirable if they can render the dredged sediment suitable for beneficial use. There are several categories of treatment techniques for contaminated dredged material. One of these categories is physical treatment. Physical treatment techniques are applied with the aim of separating or concentrating the contaminants, and are essentially based on particle separation technology. In this paper the principles and results of two different physical treatment techniques, a sedimentation depot and a hydro cyclone, are compared.
