Effects of nonionic surfactant on the biodegradation of phenanthrene by pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated with emphasis on their impacts on the bioactivity of microorganism. Tween 80 shown the best performance in enhancing the solubilization of phenanthrene in aqueous phase and was thus used as solutizer. Experimental results indicated the existence of a threshold concentration of Tween 80, over which Tween 80 appeared a superior bioavailability over phenanthrene. Below the threshold, the strain's activity in degrading phenanthrene increased gradually. The degradation was mainly accomplished in the stationary phase of bacterium growth. In addition, variation in the initial concentration of phenanthrene gave similar degradation rates. Application of electric field enhanced both the bacterium growth and the degradation of phenanthrene.
