World wide, harbor and/or river sediments are often contaminated by a dangerous mixture of organic and inorganic pollutants creating severe eco-toxicological problems. Conventionally, less expensive methods of disposal of dredged material like off shore dumping and upland placement without pretreat-ment/treatment are in use. Available pre-treatment and treatment technologies are focused on reducing the volume of dredged material by dewatering, separation, decomposition, and isolation (fixation). Based on the experience in the field of in situ bioremediation techniques for contaminated soil and groundwater the advantages of these technologies in combination with other injection techniques will be used to create an in situ treatment technology for the stabilization and biodegrada-tion of contaminated subaquatic sediments.
