Debonding in RC cantilever slabs strengthened with FRP strips

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the debonding behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) cantilever slabs strengthened with a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) strip. The test program consisted of nine model cantilever slabs of different concrete strengths and different amounts of internal steel reinforcement, strengthened with a glass FRP (GFRP) or carbon FRP (CFRP) strip formed in a wet lay-up process, or a pultruded CFRP strip. All test slabs failed by complete debonding of the FRP strip following a process of debonding propagation, with those bonded with a wet lay-up strip showing a more ductile debonding process than those with a pultruded CFRP strip. The stresses in the FRP strips at final debonding obtained from the tests can be closely predicted by the Chen and Teng (2001) bond strength model developed on the basis of simple shear tests with a simple modification.
