The following were concluded from the experimental, numerical and theoretical work described in this paper: 1. To create a competitive, structurally efficient advanced composite deck profile, an optimised fibre architecture consisting of uni-directional and off-axis fibres was required. 2. FE analysis using shell elements with 'average' properties satisfactorily modelled the global behaviour of the ASSET profile and bridge deck. 3. To obtain detailed data on the local effects on the ASSET profile, a more complex, layered shell element model is applicable. 4. Deflection (a serviceability limit state) governs the design, as opposed to strength (an ultimate limit state). 5. The level of composite action between the longitudinal box beams and ASSET profile bridge deck was significant. With further research and data, use can be made of this composite action. 6. Advanced composite components provide a lightweight, durable solution for replacement bridge decks and new-build. In addition, the lightweight nature of the material allows for swift and easy installation.
