This paper presents a set of numerical study in which a surface-bonded piezoceramic patch was used for the detection of damage in the concrete structure. The piezoceramic patch serves as a sensor and an actuator simultaneously. Changes in the conductance spectrum due to the presence of damage were investigated. The damage is quantified using root mean square deviation (RMSD) in signatures with respect to the baseline signature of the healthy state. The dependence of the RMSD index on the size and the location of damage is studied. The results show that surface-bonded piezoceramic patch can effectively detect the presence of damage and that the RMSD index may provide an indication of size and location of the damage in the concrete structure.
