Active control using boundary actions can be an attractive methodology to reduce cable vibrations excited by environmental loads. In the present paper, the longitudinal displacement of one support is considered and the attitude of different control laws is analysed in terms of stabilization of the equilibrium position under external perturbations and reduction of steady-state oscillation amplitudes under transversal in-jplane bharmonic excitation. Linear and nonlinear state feedback controllers are considered as well as feedback linearization. Comparisons of the different approaches are made on the basis of both control intensity and response amplitudes.
