Wavelets ― a new method for analysis of microstructure of composite materials

Wavelets and multiresolution techniques have been developed during recent years, and furnish a powerful representation of the data. By means of such techniques an image of the microstructure can be decomposed into a set of images or scales, each scale containing only structure of a given size. The good quality of the results furnished by methods using wavelet analysis is due to the fact that multiresolution analysis by wavelets allows us to better understand how the information is distributed in an image, and how the signal can be separated from the noise.
