MOBILE COASTAL MAPPING: UPDATING1 RETRIEVAL,DISPLAY AND DISSEMINATION USING HAND-HELD PCs AND WAP ENABLED MOBILE PHONES

Combining a small-scale airborne platform, GPS, desktop scanning technology, as wellrnas digital image processing and GIS software, now provides potential end-users with arnlow-cost data acquisition, processing and analysis toolbox to facilitate the rapidrncollection and extraction of environmental data and information and the creation ofrnmaps. Both maps and imagery can be downloaded from the desktop to hand-held PCs,rnand combined with GPS and palmtop GIS software for mobile field mapping andrnupdating tasks. Georectified aerial photography can be used as raster backdrops withrnOrdnance Survey contour datasets to aid in field mapping. Uploading data collected inrnthe field with an IRport-enabled PC with a mobile phone and modem to a desktop PCrnallows for updating GIS databases. Map server software together with a hand-held PCrnand/or WAP-enabled phone provides for access and retrieval of data and informationrn'on-the-fly' in the field from an online Internet-based GIS.
