In order to reduce handover delay and packet loss in a Host Based Routing (HBR) domain, the flow of packets to the mobile host (MH) are diverted at the crossover node (CoN)[1-3]. This is done using path update packets that create the new path from the CoN to the new location of the MH. An increase in depth of the network due to an expanding topology will further aggravate these overheads. Our proposal is an architectural extension to the path update process adding multi-homed bi-casting base stations (MHOBS) at certain depths, and point, in the topology where the overheads are most sever. Simulation results show that handover overheads due to path updates to the CoN are eliminated using MHOBS.
