A mobile ad-hoc network is an autonomous network of mobile routers that are connected via wireless links. These networks have dynamic topologies and have links that are bandwidth and energy constrained. There are many proposed schemes that solve the problem of routing packets in a dynamic ad-hoc network environment. Recent comparison work via simulations has shown that the on-demand routing protocols show better results than most proposed table driven algorithms. In this paper certain disadvantages of the on-demand protocols are presented and it is shown that if they are overcome the performance of the protocols will be enhanced. The proposed protocol uses location information of the hosts to limit the region in which a route discovery is attempted. This is an improvement on the highly redundant flooding technique used by most on demand routing algorithms. In addition to the hop count metric used by on demand schemes, the protocol uses route load as a metric to determine routes to destinations. Simulation results show that the proposed changes enhance the performance of an on-demand scheme thereby making it more scalable.
