In this paper, a distributed topology control algorithm is proposed to improve the power efficiency of routing algorithms in mobile ad hoc networks. In the algorithm, each node makes local decisions about its transmission power and these local decisions collectively retain global connectivity. The power control approach not only reduces the power consumption in transmission, but also retains the global network connectivity so that the communication routes between nodes will not be disconnected due to the power control. We also apply our topology control algorithm in some geographic routing protocols to show that the routes in the multihop network are efficient in power consumption. Finally, simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvement.
