Abstract: A parametric study has been performed on fiber gyroscope sensing coils to investigate the effects of substantially reducing the inner diameter. Three coils with inner diameters ranging from 6.0 to 1.5 cm were precision-wound with 350 meters of a high-strength, bend-insensitive single mode fiber typically used in Fiber Optic Guided Missile payout systems. Optical loss and extinction ratio measurements were made on the test coils over temperature. The results indicate that the optical loss in the bend- insensitive fiber is not significantly affected by reducing the coil diameter. The fluctuation observed in optical loss during the first thermal cycle is significantly reduced. Extinction ratio data support the theory that the bending-induced birefringence can be significant in single mode fiber wound onto small coils. !12
