The paper extends to axi-symmetric welded joints an energetic approach recently proposed by the authors to predict the static and fatigue behaviour of plates weakened by sharp re-entrant corners. Full penetration T butt weld joints between a tube and its flange are considered, subjected to pure bending, pure torsion and a combination of these loading modes. The deviatoric component of the strain energy density, averaged in a volume of radius R_C centred at the notch tip, is used as a parameter suitable for fatigue life assessments. Such an energy is given in closed form as a function of the relevant Notch Stress Intensity Factors (N-SIFs). The material is thought of as isotropic and linear elastic. In order to validate the proposal, several experimental data taken from the literature are considered. A common band is seen to summarise well all the experimental data.
