Weld Defect Detection Using High Frequency SH Guided Wave Transducers Based on Magnetostrictive Mechanism

In view of the low sensitivity to defects of low-frequency shear horizontal (SH) guided wave transducers, a high frequency SH-guided-wave transducer is designed. The guided wave modes that could be excited in high frequency are analyzed based on frequency bandwidth and spatial period. Based on the pitch-catch transducers, an experiment platform is set up and weld defects are detected. The waveforms in time domain are analyzed according to the velocity of each guided wave mode and the relative position between transducers and the weld. Finally, the weld is scanned using the designed SH-guided-wave transducers, and the image of the weld is obtained. The result shows that the transducers can effectively detect the actual defects in weld.
