The Barries of Reverse Supply Chains in Developing Countries

Firms may meet with many barriers in their forward supply chains and reverse supply chains. Although, some of these barriers are common in both forward and reverse supply chains, some barriers that firms may meet in their reverse supply chains are related with the characteristics of the reverse supply chains. The success of the reverse supply chains is mostly related with the coordination of reverse supply chains with the forward supply chains. This coordination is so important but not enough. Some other factors also affect the success of reverse supply chains.The fact that the firms that are successful in the activities of forward supply chains are also successful in the activities of reverse supply chains is not so real. Because, reverse supply chains differ from forward supply chains in many ways. There are many factors that must be evaluated for implementing the activities of reverse supply chains successfully. However, some of these factors are related with the firms, some other factors are related with the environment of the firms such as, the suppliers of the firms, the attitudes of the customers about the products that are in the end of their lives. In addition to these, the firms in developing countries may meet with many different barriers in their reverse supply chains and especially, these barriers may be related with the characteristics of developing countries. Some of these barriers may be caused from the limited financial sources, legal implications or the attitudes of the society. In this paper, the barriers of reverse supply chains in developing countries have been evaluated. The main goal of this study is to examine the barriers that firms meet in implementing reverse supply chains and to determine critical success factors of reverse supply chains in developing countries. According to the literature, the critical success factors for implementing reverse supply chains have been determined. These critical factors have been evaluated for the big firms in Turkey. For this aim, interviews have been made with three big firms that are in different sectors in Turkey. According to results of these interviews, the barriers of the reverse supply chains in Turkey have been evaluated and some suggestions were given for enhancing reverse supply chains in developing countries.
