The Role of Digital Content in the EU Information Society

At the EU Lisbon Summit of April 2000, the EU leaders have put digital content firmly on the political agenda, asking the European Commission to propose new actions to foster market development and ensure user take up. Two new actions in support of content have een finalised by the end of the year 2000: the eContent programme (2001 - 2004) and hte MEDIA PLUS programme (2001 - 2005), covering respectively the networks and services and the audiovisual component of the content world. The EU research actions on digital content are currenly covered by the Information Society Technology programme (1998-2002). This paper shortly analyses the needs of the industry and the responses proposed by the EU actions.
