Fuzzy logic-enabled state-of-charge (SOC) meters based on two interrogation techniques: (i) coulomb counting and (ii) impedance are described. This elegant approach to SOC determination has been implemented in a wide variety of battery chemistries, both primary and rechargeable. The fuzzy logic methodology is robust and shows excellent reliability despite lot-to-lot variations in battery performance commonly observed in commercial and military products. Experimental results on lead-acid and NiMH batteries are presented.
