In this paper, the current status of electric vehicle energy sources is reviewed and the concept of multiple energy sources for EVs is presented. Four energy sources namely, batteries, fuel cells, ultracapacitors and ultrahigh-speed flywheels will be introduced and evaluated for EV application. Hybridization of two energy sources in EV will be identified in enhancing both the fuel economy and driving range performances. The optimal hybridization ratio for an classical sedan vehicles will be determined by a mixed-signal electric vehicle simulator. Hence the corresponding near-term and long-term hybridization measures will be discussed.
