The IEA Agreement for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Enters into its Second Phase.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is a Paris based organization associated with the OECD and its members are the Governments of 25 industrialized nations. Its mandate is to encourage international collaboration in a wide range of energy technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicles. An international task force (called Implementing Agreement in the terminology of the IEA) was set up in November 1993 to help electric vehicles reach their full market potential. During the first year ten countries joined, this has subsequently increased to fourteen. A second phase of the Agreement will start in November 1999, and will focus on an information exchange among member Governments, hybrid vehicles, energy and environmental issues, market introduction, and exploratory research in batteries and supercapacitors. It is also planned to expand the dissemination of the reports produced by the Agreement. The objective of the second phase will be to provide member Governments with objective information and assessments of hybrid and electric vehicle technologies, and to produce publications which member Governments can distribute to the hybrid and electric vehicle community in their countries.
