The problem of estimating the phase and frequency of an amplitudernmodulated sinusoidal signal is well-known. Estimators andrncorresponding performance bounds both for noise-like modulatingrnfunctions and for purely deterministic modulating functions of differentrnparametric models, i.e. polynomial or auto-regressive, arernavailable in the literature. In this paper, we consider the case ofrnknown and unknown deterministic modulating functions with unspecifiedrnmodel. It will be shown that the asymptotic Cramèr-Raornlower bounds (ACRBs) for known and unknown modulating functionsrnare equal. Some similarities to the case of multiplicative noisernare shown. Furthermore, the variance and bias of the standard discreternFourier transform (DFT)-based estimators in case of deterministicrnamplitude modulation are discussed, and maximum likelihoodrnestimators (MLEs) in case of known modulating functions arernderived.
