Biobased renewables are of high interest as they may substitute petro-based chemicals in the long-term future. Many bio-based, alternative monomers are already taken into account, both in scientific researches and in commercial use. Most of them are excellent substitutes regarding flexible and elastic properties of wood coatings. In contrast, isosorbide as a bicyclic diol, is considered to be a suitable monomer, bringing hardness and impact resilience to the resulting polyester-based polyurethane dispersion. These dispersions can be used as binders for wood coatings. In addition to the results shown at ETCC 2014, acrylic polyurethane hybrid resins will be presented. The research was focused on the demonstration of chemical bonding between the acrylic and the polyurethane part. Therefore, hybrids and blends were synthesized and compared by different analytical methods. Finally, the polymer composition was optimized and the resins were formulated to test coating film properties for various applications. The results were partly gained within the EU project „NEXT1KOAT".
