Biological gas treatment has been shown to be an effective and inexpensive technique for the removal of low concentrations of contaminants from waste gas streams. A number of multiphase contacting devices have been developed to improve the contacting efficiency in gas liquid systems. The most widely used technologies are: biofilters, biotrickling filters, and bioscrubbers. This work suggests a novel reactor technology for biological gas treatment; the monolith reactor. The monolith offers some clear advantages over conventional bioreactors such as high mass transfer and a low pressure drop, making it a competitive alternative for conventional biological gas treatment bioreactors. The main potential problem of monoliths is clogging due to biofilm formation. This was experimentally investigated, in a pilot-scale monolith reactor.
