PCBs are metabolised by bacteria to chlorobenzoic acids, which can be further transformed by organisms living in the contaminated environment (microorganisms, plants, insects etc). Plants used for transformation of PCBs different enzymes than bacteria and the main intermediates of plant metabolism are hydrox-ychlorobiphenyls. In order to follow the fate of products of bacterial and plant PCB metabolism in the environment, we studied further degradation of plant-formed hydroxychlorobiphenyls by bacterial enzymes of upper biphenyl pathway and on the other hand degradation of chlorobenzoic acids by plants.
