This paper proposes a novel receiver structure basedon soft information for linearly precoded MIMO-OFDMsystems. The architecture combines an MMSE-basedfront end with an iterative technique based on maximumlikelihood detection (MLD) in a structure that exhibitstwo very attractive features. Firstly, it can fully exploitthe diversity benefits of spreading the information symbolsin the space and frequency domains by optimallyestimating them. Secondly, and under the realistic assumptionof the presence of a cyclic redundancy check(CRC) mechanism, the far more computationally demandingMLD component needs only be used when theMMSE front end has failed. Simulation results revealthat the MLD iterative mechanism adds only a negligibleamount of computations to the simple MMSE detectorwhile significantly improving its performance.
