The chemical precipitation process represents a simple and versatile synthetic route to produce uniform, non-agglomerated sub-micrometer size metallic particles, which can be used successfully in electronic applications. While the superiority of this technique over all others in generating highly uniform particles is rarely contested, the nickel powders produced are in general polycrystalline and are characterized by the presence of a rather extensive internal grain boundary surface. As a result, they tend to display unsuitable oxidation and sintering properties for the technically demanding MLCC applications. This work describes an attempt to address these shortcomings while preserving all the other desirable characteristic of the precipitated powders.
