A high purity titanium powder was compacted using high velocity compaction. One or more impacts were performed on 3 g samples with a fixed energy level. The densities of the impacted samples were measured and polished cross-sections were investigated. The highest density could be observed in the centre of the samples, where a visible sharply defined area could be observed having almost full density. The metallic grains were plastically deformed into each other, forming continuous contact areas between the grains instead of only contact points. If higher impact energy or several impacts were used the high-density area grew outward until it had reached the surfaces all around the samples, and samples of 98 % green density could be obtained. Because of the extensive surface contact between the grains the sintering could be performed at a lower temperature than after uniaxial pressing. The material could be used for dental implants.
