In tunnel designing the earth pressure at rest due to natural stress state (Ko) is usually considered. For heavy over-consolidated (OC) soils this assumption can lead to unsafe designs. The OC-induced pressure should be treated as internal stresses between soil particles that may relax during shield driving. Thus, as it results from the comparative diagram presented in the paper, the real inner forces in a tunnel lining can be essentially different.
