This paper presents outline of a Research and Development project calledrnRING (Research Association of Refinery Integration for Group-Operation) formulatedrnby Japanese oil refinery and petrochemical industry for recovery of competitivenessrnthrough inter-refinery and refinery-petrochemical operational integration as well asrnupgrading of energy and safety performance as a result of the RING project. Newrntechnologies employed in this project include (1) real time data sharing and display ofrnoperating data of pipeline transport, (2) real time emergency location detection insiderncontained space, and (3) safety and environmental information sharing by faster andrnlarger capacity data interchange.
