The absorptance of different steels, aluminium alloys and copper alloys at diode-laser wavelength of 808 nm has been measured by a computerized calorimetric device. The investigation included measurements of technical as well as of polished surfaces and comparative measurements with Nd:YAG laser radiation. The wavelength dependence, the dependence on angle of incidence and the influence of surface conditions on absorptance have been investigated. Due to the shorter wavelength higher absorptance values can be obtained compared to Nd:YAG radiaiton. For three groups of materials it turned out that alloying elements do not show a strong influence on absorptance. The influence of roughness, on the other hand, is significant.
