A representative shock test at equipment level is the keyelement in order to achieve a successful and reliablequalification. Past experiences have shown that adedicated attention shall be given to the selection of theshock test facility as well as to the test execution.A ringing plate is an adequate way to reproduce arepresentative high frequency shock environment. Asopposed to other test methods (burst test on shaker ordrop test), a ringing plate generates a spatiallyuncorrelated excitation of the test unit, thus inducingsimilar effects than pyrotechnical shock loads onspacecraft components.A shock bench, able to meet the stringent requirementsfor spacecraft equipment qualification, has beendeveloped and is now part of the standard offerproposed by the ESTEC's Test Centre. The objective isto make available, to spacecraft and equipmentdevelopers, a versatile and repeatable system able togenerate a shock around 1500g @ 1500Hz, in bothdirections (in plane and out of plane), for a wide varietyof test specimens and according to quality standards.A comprehensive characterisation test campaign hasbeen conducted and several qualification tests have beenperformed, confirming the excellentperformance/capability of the shock bench.In support to the test preparation, some numericalsimulations (NASTRAN and DYTRAN) with adequatemodelling techniques can also be performed. A verygood correlation with test data is demonstrated over thewhole frequency range, thus making this capabilitysuitable for consolidating the test parameters and/ordefining the test parameters for particular testconfigurations.This paper describes the set-up of the ESTEC shockbench, the results of the comprehensive test campaignand the undertaken approach for high frequencydynamic structural analysis.
