摘要

Implants based on titanium (Ti) are in long-term use in reconstructive bone surgery due to the excellent physico-chemical stability and good bio-compatibility of the material. However, the implantation of such implants is followed by an acute and chronic inflammatory response which might persist for as long as the material remains in the body. As this response determines the long-term functionality of the implant and the clinical outcome for the patient, different approaches to improve the biocompatibility of Ti implants are still a matter of ongoing research.
