Bioactive glasses are unsuitable as scaffolds for bone regeneration sites under cyclic loading. Hybrid materials have the potential for superior toughness to resist fracture and are specific types of nanocomposite materials: the two components interact at the molecular level. The incorporation of calcium into hybrids is a problematic, but is required to stimulate new bone formation. Calcium nitrate is used in forming bioactive sol-gel glasses. Unfortunately, the temperatures required to incorporate calcium into the silicate network and remove the toxic nitrate byproducts (400 °C) are unsuitable for polymer incorporation. [1] Calcium
