Mechanical and polymerization characteristics of a novel bone cement

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been used as a bone cement material for over 60 years and has provided a reasonable service history. However, the key properties of PMMA as a bone cement are far from ideal. PMMA cement placement can result in tissue necrosis due to chemical and/or thermal insult which compromise the bone-cement interface and often result in premature failure. Other limitations include the volatile and potentially harmful liquid component of the mixture, undesirable working and setting characteristics and excessive heat production on setting which may damage bone and/or reduce the effectiveness of antibiotic additives. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanical and polymerization characteristics of an experimental single-paste cement material that cures in bulk by photoactivation.
