摘要

The first biological events that lead to the appropriate response of already successfully-proved biomaterials, such as commercially pure titanium (cp Ti), are mainly influenced by the interactions at the bio/non-bio interface. Tailoring implant surfaces represents a key factor to control protein adsorption, and further cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Surface properties such as chemical composition, crystal structure, topography, surface energy and electrical charge direct the interaction between the synthetic material and the surrounding entities and fluids. Single crystals offer an ideal surface with a controlled crystal structure, flatness and chemical composition that allows independent analysis of these variables and so, to carry out elemental surface modifications and assess their effects on particular responses [1].
