Simulated West Valley high-level waste glass samples from core-drilled canisters were examined by optical microscope. Spinel was the major crystalline phase. Both spatial and size distribution of spinel crystals exhibited pronounced nonuniformity. Altering layers of glass with high and low crystal number density produced a marbling pattern.
