The aqueous corrosion of crystalline ceramics has receied little attention because ceramics are generally thougth to be corrosion resistant. However, ceramics can corrode and their corrosion resistance can be a measure of their potential for nuclear waste hosts. The kinetics controlling the corrosion of ceramics varies from transport of diffusing ions to surface reactions. Both the thermodynamics of dissolution and the rates of reaction are sensitive to system variables such as the temperature and the solution composition.
