Opencast mining operations causes harvesting of forest, destruction of habitat and the accumulation of huge quantities of overburden dumps in and around the mining areas. Mine dumps are devoid of soil microbes, organic matter, soil moisture and plant available nutrients but have excess amount of heavy methals and its toxicity. Rehabilitation of these waste dumps is thus a challenging job for the mines manager Ecology technology is now an important aspect for the sustainability of mining industry in terms of economics, technology and the environment. Three waste dumps have been selected as case studies in Jharia and Raniganj coalfields of India. Pilot scale projects have indicated that the waste dumps can be rehabilitated economically and ecologically if the planning and implementation of the works are executed scientifically and timely.
