A rational approach to the assessment of environmental issues in stone quarrying districts

The practical viability and the efficiency of matrix methods for the assessment of environmental impact have already been demonstrated in the case of individual mining and quarrying projects. However no successful attempts have yet been made for extending the concept to entire districts. To this end, the AEVIA approach has been used as the basis for the construction and the implementation of a suitable procedure capable of solving the problem. The paper deals with the application of the devised matrix tool to the case of a dimensional stone district in Sardinia, where more than 15 granite quarries are concentrated in a small area, very close to a town and characterised by the presence of forests and of significant naturalistic and cultural values.
