The paper presents an outline of current United States Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives to "cleanup" contaminated sites that have resulted from 50 years of nuclear weapons development and testing, utilizing innovative environmental technologies. A wide variety of innovative and existing technologies are being developed and applied to remediate contaminated sites. The health and safety aspects of the technology should be incorporated early in its development to minimize costly design changes. The operators of the technologies require mandated safety and health training especially in preparation for working in hazardous operations.
