The use of ammoniacal ammonium carbonate (AAC) leaching for zinc extraction from secondary materials is reported. Detailed results are presented of a laboratory investigation on the de-zincing and detoxification of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) carbon steel-making dust. As received from three steel-making companies, EAF dust samples were all found to be toxic when tested according to the current US toxicity testing procedure. AAC leaching of the dusts was found able to rapidly solubilize the contained free zinc oxide to yield non-toxic residues.
