GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION, RISK ASSESSMENT AND REMEDIATION OF FORMER MILITARY SITES IN EAST GERMANY

About 1,500 contaminated military sites - of which about 1,100 belonged to the former Western Group of the Soviet Troops and about 400 of the Bundeswehr - have been identified in East Germany since 1991. The assessment and remediation of contaminated military sites includes the following steps: inventory, preliminary assessment, investigation, risk assessment, and remediation.rnThe contamination potential is dependent upon the use of the sites. The risk is greatest in the case of fuel depots, airfields, military training areas, and barracks.rnPetrochemicals, scrap metal and mineral wastes are the dominating contaminants, with soil and groundwater being the most frequently affected. Stabilisation and averting dangers are at the centre of efforts for the remediation of contaminated sites. Further remediation measures depend on the subsequent use of the given site.
