ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND REMEDIATION PRACTICES AT FORMER AND ACTIVE MILITARY BASES

Clean-up of contaminated military sites and their conversion for future civilian use will remain a task for almost every country for quite some time. Germany has been expending resources for nearly 7 years on the process of registration, investigation, assessment and clean-up of these sites. The goals of the German program are two-fold: first, to avoid environmental damage and to protect the population from negative effects caused by contamination of such sites; and secondly, to render military sites fit for subsequent commercial, recreational or other civilian uses.
