The Victory Bridge Replacement project in Perth Amboy, NJ was schedule driven. A previous design-build (D/B) contract for the new bridge was terminated with foundations partially in-place. The new design team was charged to meet an expedited schedule to get the project back on track. The entire time span from design contract award to completion of the bridge was four years. The geologic conditions and constructibility issues for the replacement (a high-level 3,971 ft long precast segmental concrete structure) required the use of varying deep foundation types and ground improvement methods to save time and money. The foundations for the structure were varied to make use of foundations installed by the D/B contractor, as well as to shorten the time to construct the substructure. The foundations were 24 in. dia. pipe piles for the land piers and 6 and 8-ft dia. drilled shafts for the water piers. The drilled shafts (up to 120 ft long) were socketed into bedrock to resist large lateral loads due to seismic events and vessel impact.
