The majority of the cost of a product is determined during design. In modern industry it is often the case that the oriiginal equipment manufacturer subcontracts much of the piece part manufacture and sub-assembly work to an extended supply chain. Knowledge based engineering technologies are increasingly being used to automate the design of parts there the geometyr is dependent upon known rules. This paper presents a framework for extending such applications to incorporate machining analysis for the assessment of part cost during design. The development of such a system for a family of civil aircraft parts is discussed.
